The most important tea master in Japanese history, Sen no Rikyū who lived and died at Daitokuji, shaped the Japanese tea ceremony into what it is today. Before Rikyū, tea gatherings were fancy, where people showed wealth and power. Rikyū taught that tea should be: simple, quiet, humble and deeply human.
